Group to protest cryptocurrency request | Local News

A group opposed to efforts to locate a cryptocurrency mining facility in Greenville is gathering at 4 p.m. on Friday to gather support, organizers announced.

The event will take place at 4 p.m. at the Cherrie Maye Event Center, 3511 N. Memorial Drive. The group includes representatives from the Association of Mexicans in North Carolina, Interfaith Clergy and the Pitt County NAACP.

A news release from the group said they plan to oppose efforts by Compute North to locate a facility in Greenville. The group also opposed efforts to place a facility in northern Pitt County near Belvoir school.

The City of Greenville Planning and Zoning Commission voted Dec. 21 to recommend changes to the city code that would permit “modular data processing facility” and “data processing center” as two separate uses in the city and set zoning districts where the facilities could be located.

The changes, if approved Monday by the Greenville City Council, will allow facilities to apply for permits to operate in those areas. The changes were requested the Minnesota-based company.
