SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A new cryptocurrency mining facility will be making its way to Sullivan County.
The project is financed by Kentucky-based crypto pioneers called About Bit. The company has teamed up with Win Energy and Hoosier Energy to bring next generation jobs to Sullivan County.
Cryptocurrency mining facilities house thousands of uniquely designed computers, which are designed to solve mathematical equations on a constant basis. Crypto mining is a process in which a machine performs certain tasks to obtain a bit of cryptocurrency.
The Sullivan County Council held a meeting Monday night to showcase the company called About Bit.
CEO of About Bit Stacy Griggs said he’s glad they chose Sullivan County.
“We looked across eight different states and this area was perfect. But what we didn’t know until we started working up here we’re the people,” Griggs said. “And the people that we’re working with up here have been just wonderful and really reinforced our decision to make this the home for our mining facility.”
The new cryptocurrency mining facility will be located adjacent to the generating station in Merom. Construction of the data center will be on the same site as the power plant, which means the environmental impact of construction would be minimized.
Vice President of Sullivan County Council Jackie Monk said she’s excited about the new facility, but still has some questions.
“I am concerned about the energy, the usage of energy that they will be using. How will it effect out county,” Monk said. “I wanna learn a little bit more about it. Will it effect the electric bills with businesses. Electric bills for residents here. Because that’s the last thing we need.”
Full operations plan to begin at the end of this year. The facility will also initially create six to ten jobs in Sullivan County.
