That’s all until Red Dead Redemption 2 , Rockstar Games’ long-awaited and highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2010 Western epic Red Dead Redemption , and a title that is aiming to take the next step when it comes to delivering a truly immersive open-world experience. Coming off the heels of the previous game — one which many look back on as one of the best games of the last generation — it’s an understatement to say that Red Dead Redemption 2 has been a long time coming, and even more so to point out the unbearably high expectations that have been placed on it.
While these relationships definitely had their use in these action-heavy segments of the demo, the interactions that Arthur has with the other members of the gang also play out in more narratively-driven ways. While trekking through the mountains with John and Bill in a later story section that we played, I had the option to talk to Bill along the way to learn more about the rival gang camp that we were about to ambush. Staying silent would have been a completely viable option as well, but having those type of options speaks to the ways that Red Dead Redemption 2 is aiming for a more dynamic and natural way for players to interact with its world and characters.
Fans of the first Red Dead Redemption understand the importance of a good campfire. Not only was it treated as a save location, it was also the area in which you could fast travel and change outfits. Fans were treated to a beautiful shot of a campfire deep within the wilderness with a gorgeous backdrop of the night sky. It wouldn’t surprise us if the campfires served the exact same purpose they did in the first Red Dead Redemption . The only other element that would be a welcome addition to the campfire menu would be if it were the area in which you could level up and/or upgrade your skills. This would assume that Rockstar is leaning more into the RPG mechanics of an open-world experie
These moments from Red Dead Redemption 2 very much feel like “Rockstar” moments. These are the types of moments that trailers for their past titles, such as Grand Theft Auto V , have highlighted to hone in on the fact that their games aim to feel larger than life, and delivering the types of action and spectacle that we see on the big screen and the films that Rockstar has always turned to for inspiration .
Have a small champion pool from which you alter your role in-game. While the system itself will be familiar to those that played the previous game, the sense of your actions having consequences has interesting ripple effects thanks to the ways that your decisions reverberate throughout the rest of Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s world. In one part of the story after completing a heist, as I ventured into the town of Valentine as Arthur and interacted with various NPCs, some of them would ask if I heard about “the robbery just outside of town,” and whispered about the fact that there were quite a few casualties as a result.
Now, who doesn’t love a good video game dog? It seems that over the last three years, companion canines have become a growing trend that players absolutely love. Dogmeat from Fallout 4 was the latest example of how fulfilling it is to traverse a large open world with a loyal dog by your side. The trailer didn’t necessarily show any indication that you could own a dog, but it did make a big deal about animal interactions in the scene from inside a very muddy town that included a scruffy dog barking at a pack of vultures. Though Rockstar hasn’t necessarily dived into party member, mechanic role-playing games, it doesn’t mean they’d never included it in their games. Don’t be surprised if there’s a portion of this game dedicated to your relationship with a dog.
