GIRLS BKB: ALL SAINTS 43, PECK 25
Bay City All Saints didn’t get a chance at the league title a year ago.
But the Cougars are sensing the opportunity this time around.
With a 43-25 victory over Peck, the Cougars reached the midway point of the North Central Thumb League Stripes Division season unscathed. After getting shut down just seven games into last season due to coronavirus issues, All Saints is on a tear to regain the league title it won in 2020.
All Saints (10-2, 5-0) bolted to a 9-0 lead on Peck and never relented while landing its seventh consecutive victory, its longest winning streak since rattling off 12 in a row in 2017.
“The most important thing was getting off to a great start,” All Saints coach Mike Debo said. “We talked about energy, and I’m excited about the effort we had from the get-go.”
All Saints led 13-3 after one quarter and 27-7 by halftime against winless Peck (0-13, 0-5).
Iris Costilla set the tone with nine first-quarter points and finished with a 13-point, seven-rebound, nine-steal performance. Lili Costilla tallied 14 points with six rebounds and four steals.
Annaka Neetz came through with eight points and nine boards while Madie Werner notched five points and four steals.
The victory pushed All Saints to the 10-win mark for the seventh time in eight seasons, interrupted only by last year’s abbreviated 5-2 campaign.
All Saints hosts second-place Carsonville-Port Sanilac on Friday in a pivotal conference clash.
GIRLS BKB: CASEVILLE 35, AKRON-FAIRGROVE 29
Caseville turned the tables on Akron-Fairgrove from their earlier meeting, taking the NCTL Stripes rematch 35-29.
Akron-Fairgrove (3-11, 3-3) trailed 11-4 after the first quarter and couldn’t make up ground. Baily Diehl delivered a double-double for the Vikings with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Gloria Diehl scored seven points while Rylee Crosby notched six points and seven rebounds.

GIRLS BKB: OSCODA 70, WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT 21
Oscoda was feeling it, firing it and filling it right from the start, powering past Whittemore-Prescott 70-21 behind its long-range accuracy to hit the 10-win mark.
The Owls (10-4) sank 14 3-pointers in the contest, including six in a 28-point opening quarter.
Oscoda put four players in double scoring figures, with Marlene Sobrino-Salvador tallying 14, Grace Bergquist 12, Megan Myles 11 and Kaylin Griggs 10.
GIRLS BKB: HILLMAN 60, AU GRES 10
Au Gres didn’t dent the scoreboard until the second quarter, falling to Hillman 60-10 in North Star League play.
The Wolverines (1-10, 0-5) were down 25-0 after one quarter and 40-4 at the half.
Emily Freehling notched six points, six rebounds and four blocked shots for Au Gres. Elizabeth Beardsley contributed four rebounds. Nicole Barbeau led Hillman (8-5, 5-1) with 17 points and Julia Taratuta scored 12.
GIRLS BKB: PETOSKEY 47, OGEMAW HEIGHTS 30
Ogemaw Heights started strong with a 14-point opening quarter, only to see its offense falter from there in a 47-30 loss to Petoskey.
Ogemaw (7-8) led 14-8 after the first quarter but Petoskey was on top 18-16 by halftime and inched away from there.
Ailie Beck led the Falcons with 13 points while Savannah Wright notched six points and eight rebounds. Paige Liddell added seven rebounds.
BOYS BKB: LAKER 69, CARO 39
Hunter Krohn was an unstoppable force, dropping in 26 points to power Laker to a 69-39 victory over Caro in Greater Thumb West action.
Krohn hit 13 shots from the floor in his big game, scoring 20 in the first half alone as Laker built a 33-18 advantage.
Mikel Good added 11 points and Dylan Wehner eight for the Lakers (9-2, 5-2). Marik Phillips led Caro with 14 points.
BOYS BKB: UBLY 46, CASS CITY 36
Cass City couldn’t break free on offense, suffering a 46-36 loss to Ubly for its third setback in four games.
Riley Swiderski had a solid game with 13 points for Cass City (6-4). Michael Fernald scored nine points and Carter Patrick seven in the loss.

BOYS BKB: ST. HELEN HESTON 43, SASA 36
St. Helen Charlton Heston shook off a slow start, charging back for a 43-36 victory over Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy.
SASA built an 11-point first-quarter lead before Heston cut it to three by halftime. Jordan Smiecinski drilled a 3-pointer that gave the Patriots (8-4) the lead for keeps with four minutes to play.
Ryan Patterson led Heston with 12 points while Smiecinski and Nick Stephens each finished with nine.

HOCKEY: BAY CITY WOLVES 5, PINCKNEY 4
On a night when the Bay City Wolves honored their seven seniors, they parlayed a fast start into a 5-4 victory over Pinckney at Bay County Civic Arena.
The Wolves (13-6) scored four first-period goals to take charge then held on for the win. Cayden Kerkau stopped 21 shots on goal in the victory.
Cody Deneut notched two goals and an assist while Ryker DeCaire, Nick Feinauer and Kade Brayman each added one goal. Gunnar Weber delivered two assists while Dalton Derocher and Logan Cottrell each had one.
The Wolves saluted Deneut, Brayman, Kerkau, Cottrell, Bowen Kraut, Kaleb Borowski and Evan Revette on Senior Night.
WRESTLING: OSCODA FEATURES TWO CHAMPIONS
Oscoda captured two titles and three runner-up finishes at the North Star League Championship.
James London (119) and Anthony Ward (152) won titles with undefeated runs through the six-team field. Jhonas Williams (103), Isaiah Spragg (125) and Ian Boboltz (140) made it to the title match before settling for second place.
Other league champions include Whittemore-Prescott’s Gabrielle Murphy (103), Dillan Parent (140), Samuel Vyner (160) and Jesse Morrison (189), Ogemaw’s Lance Monroe (130), Xander Kartes (145) and Jake Morrison (285), Mio’s Tyler Demory (112) and Draven Karbowski (135) and Rogers City’s Hayden Hentkowski (125) and Anthony Paull (171).
BOWLING: ALL SAINTS SCORES A SWEEP
Bay City All Saints landed a pair of victories over Whittemore-Prescott, with the girls winning 19.5-10.5 and the boys prevailing 17-13.
Elyse Grekowicz paced the All Saints girls with a 276 two-game set while Morgan Hawk tallied a 341 for Whittemore-Prescott.
Robbie Ballard rolled a 329 set and Caleb Adcock a 322 for the All Saints boys. Cameron Smith led W-P at 347 and Bryson Melrose tallied 312.
