British intelligence agencies are investigating cryptocurrency transactions at Bitstamp according to a report by the NewScientist on February 25th, 2022.
According to the report, Bitstamp, Europe’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, says it has handed over information on some of its users to the UK’s intelligence agencies, MI5 and MI6. The UK’s Security Service (MI5), is responsible for preventing terrorism and espionage domestically, while MI6 is tasked with the UK’s foreign intelligence— it is unconfirmed if the investigation is into the use of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies for serious organized crime and terrorism.
